Summer is my favorite time of the year. The warmer weather, a season of celebrations with graduations and weddings and, of course, the opportunity to take a vacation for a little rest and relaxation. When we were in our youth, it was a time for a break from school and maybe even the opportunity for a little time away at summer camp.
As we age, these opportunities for “summer camp” and time for new experiences may seem out of reach. However, this summer I want to invite older adults and baby boomers in the Triad to look around and find a “camp” experience for seniors. Recently I heard of a great new concept, “Leisure University”; it seems that summer, the season of leisure, is a great time for all of us to enroll!
As you begin to look around for a “University,” I encourage you to look for your neighborhood Senior Center. Senior Centers, located throughout the Triad, are a spot where active older adults can come together to participate in activities that focus on socialization and recreation, providing opportunities for health and wellness education as well as trips to points of interest both near and far, in addition to making new friends.
Studies show that it is important as we age, that we stay active both mentally and physically. Look for ways to participate in activities. In Guilford County the Bardolph Senior Center offers brain fitness classes, Spanish classes, tai chi and other exercise classes, and line dancing as well as evidence-based fitness programs such as A Matter of Balance and Healthy Living.
We also have the Senior Resources Travelers who are always on the go to points of interest near and far. Similar activities are happening throughout the Triad so call Senior Resources of Guilford’s Senior Line (336-333-6981) to find out where the nearest “University” or Senior Center is to you.
Of course, in the current economic climate with reductions flowing and needs increasing, there is a growing need for volunteers to make an impact in their community. Senior Centers, Volunteer Centers, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Programs throughout the Triad can help you find the perfect activity where you can make a difference through volunteer service. I can assure you that you will receive more than you give as a volunteer! Sounds to me like a great way to explore new opportunities this summer!
If you think you are not quite ready to go to camp at the Senior Center, there is a group in Guilford County that may help you transition from employment to retirement: Consider joining the Guilford Boomers. Visit the website designed just for Baby Boomers at www.guilfordboomers.org to see the range of activities that Boomers are participating in, ranging from travel to progressive dinners, from food tours to classes on personal safety, interior design, and other areas of interest. Join the Boomers and you are sure to enjoy camp this season.
Hopefully by now you will agree that summer is not just for the young any more. Reach out. Find out what opportunities are available that you would enjoy and enroll soon at your nearest “University”! You may just find that you never want to graduate! Hope to see you soon at school. Happy Summer!
