Stroke, the fourth most common killer in the U.S. behind heart attack, COPD, and cancer, has several risk factors. They are as follows:
Types of Stroke:
Hemorrhagic is caused by a weakened blood vessel which ruptures, causing a bleed in the brain.
Ischemic is caused by a blockage (clot). Approximately 80 percent of strokes are ischemic.
TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) has the same symptoms as a regular stroke but resolves within minutes with no permanent damage.
Controllable Risk Factors: High blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise, obesity, and high cholesterol.
Uncontrollable Risk Factors: Age, race and gender. Other factors include atrial fibrillation and uncontrolled diabetes
Symptoms of Stroke: According to the National Stroke Association, F.A.S.T. (Face, Arm, Speech, Tongue) is the list of possible symptoms. Deficits on one side of any of these areas can be signs of stroke. If you experience or recognize these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
