The primary goal for cancer patients both during and following treatment is to maintain a normal and active lifestyle. But, it’s hard when the treatments reduce the red blood cells that carry oxygen to the cells, thereby creating an extreme fatigue which demands rest, inactivity, and withdrawal from normal life. So, what can a patient do to help overcome the fatigue and depression associated with cancer?
Physicians are recommending exercise as one of the ways of off-setting these debilitating symptoms. “Studies show that cancer patients who exercise are less tired and depressed and sleep better than patients who don’t exercise” (NCNN – National Comprehensive Cancer Network) With an appropriate exercise program, fatigue is shown to be reduced by 40 to 50 percent. Even more impressive is the fact that exercise is shown to lower the risk of recurrence and increase the level of general fitness and survival time.
Exercise programs are different for each individual. They are highly related to the type and stage of cancer, the type of treatment being used, and the level of general fitness. Therefore, personalized programs under the direction of trained professionals are the most effective in helping to address the most common complaint of cancer victims… “sapped energy” and extreme fatigue.
Multiple new studies reveal that exercise helps off-set the impact of cancer and cancer treatments, decreases the percentage of recurrence in survivors, and helps to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
Cancer patients can talk with their physicians regarding a regulated exercise program. Additional information is available at no cost by contacting A.C.T. by Deese, a fitness studio located in Greensboro. (Call 336-617-5304).
