Looking at the list of activites at SearStone, you might think you were at a resort rather than a retirement community. With offerings from art classes, lectures, concerts, dance instruction, golf outings, field trips to sporting events and symphony performances, conversational French club, yoga and more, it’s no wonder residents are never bored. They even have a group of athletes who participate in the Wake County Senior Games.
“It’s like being on a cruise ship,” says Rita McTigue.
“We have ample room, and there’s something to do every day if you wanted to,” adds husband Bob.
The SearStone community was designed around the concept of “new urbanism,” promoting walkable neighborhoods, social interactions and an active lifestyle. Research has shown that active seniors are likely to be healthier and mentally sharper than sedentary ones. SearStone is also just down the street from Prestonwood Country Club and across the street from grocery stores, restaurants, specialty shops, and more.
SearStone has a full-time director of resident life and a wellness director in addition to an energetic staff and 24-hour concierge service.
“It is just so darn fun, and there are so many things to do!” says Marshall Carter. He can usually be found in the Fitness Center doing flexibility and balance exercises in the afternoon. His wife Janet is dedicated to her yoga practice and other classes.
Beyond the borders of SearStone, many residents are also active in the greater community, volunteering at nonprofit organizations, singing in church choirs or lobbying the legislature regarding senior-related issues.
Award winning
Although SearStone is less than three years old, it has already received recognition and accolades, both locally and nationally. Readers of Cary Magazine recently selected SearStone as the Best Active Adult Community in Western Wake County, earning it a Maggy Award from that publication. Subsequently, residents enjoyed participating in a photo shoot for the magazine that simulated a red-carpet gala, waving to onlookers while paparazzi snapped photos.
Last year Dining Services Director Kevin Johnson won the Enhancing Resident Experience Award from Sodexo Global, a worldwide leader in quality-of-life and food services. Johnson collected his reward at a national banquet in Washington, D.C., after winning at the regional level.
These are the first of what will surely be many more awards that SearStone will reap over the coming years, all stemming from the philosophy of keeping residents active, engaged and happy.
