Have your physical therapy sessions come to an end? Have you been placed in charge of your own rehabilitation? Can you still feel the pain that hinders your movement and cramps your lifestyle?
Insurance restrictions can sometimes force the closure of physical therapy before patients feel completely healed. Without the knowledge and discipline needed in order to continue exercising, patients can be left with permanent limitations…and, after surgery or an accident, could never reach their goal of returning to a normal lifestyle.
Post-rehabilitation plans are critical to recovery by allowing patients to continue supervised programs of exercise until healthy movements are fully re-established. The benefits include such things as removing chronic pain, restoring independence, creating greater flexibility, and increasing strength.
Carol Sellars has a story which clearly defines the benefits of a plan to persevere with an exercise program.
One afternoon, while training her new puppy, Carol turned quickly, flipped over her dog, and landed on her left shoulder. She broke the top of her humerus in two places.
Because of the location of the two breaks, the orthopedist placed Carol’s arm in a sling instead of a cast, and after six weeks, she began therapy to regain her range of motion.
When Carol was finally able to move her arm, she was unable to reach above her head. And, when she was released from therapy, she was given the understanding that she might never be able to raise her arm any higher than her shoulder.
Disappointed, but unwilling to accept the prognosis, Carol sought the help of a personal trainer. Her goal was clear: she wanted her arm to function as it had before her fall. She was willing to work with the trainer once a week and to attend an exercise class on a regular basis. Carol’s arm responded, and below is her rewarding statement of success:
“I can now raise it (the damaged arm) forward up to my head, sideways higher than my shoulder, and backwards farther than most people can reach. It is my hope that others will be challenged to continue therapy as I did. It has made my life so much better as I celebrate my 87th year.”
Carol’s story is a striking example of determination and dedication that can exist within the human spirit. It is also a lesson in taking charge of our fitness and body condition through regular exercise. Congratulations to Carol with appreciation for her testimony.
