A new exhibit commemorating World War I opened April 6 at the N.C. Museum of History, marking to the day the entry of the United States into the conflict 100 years ago.
Its 6500 square feet of exhibit space mark it as probably the largest ever mounted by a state history museum. Visitors are able to experience a little of what the war was like as they view a life-sized replica of the trench environment and a maze of seven-foot-high walls spread over much of the exhibit. Hundreds of sandbags line an “earthen” trench.
Adding to the experience are Interactive videos and film footage “periscopes” which dot the way and a re-created field hospital. Wall-sized photo murals, historical film footage, and heart-pounding battlefield sounds and lights complete the scene.
