World War One. The 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the War to End All Wars is a good time to remember a war that began when a Serbian assassin shot Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. In the next five years, more than nine million soldiers had been killed, over a million of them in the infamous Battle of the Somme. The North Carolina Museum of History has mounted a remarkable exhibit which is remindful of the horror of that bloody conflict.
North Carolina got its own French chateau in 1985 when George Vanderbilt chose to build a home in the North Carolina mountains. Today a million visitors annually travel to Asheville to view the Biltmore Estate and Winery, modeled from a French Chateau and 16th-century castles in the Loire Valley of France.
