Wintertime. Love it or hate it … or both! Fortunately, it’s a season with much promise when you live in central North Carolina. Aside from the fact that our winters are mild and reasonably short-lived, Wintertime accentuates the fun that awaits indoors. For years, the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) has hosted wonderful Broadway Shows and entertainment of all variety. They have now been joined in that space by the newly opened Tanger Center in Greensboro, upping the ante for great cultural offerings for our area. Read more about this in our cover story this issue, and embrace wintertime for the cozy opportunities it presents.
Wintertime is a great time for planning for the future as well. David Ammons, among the most knowledgeable professionals in our state regarding retirement options and future-casting for older adults, has penned a most interesting column this issue regarding the state of the senior housing industry. Despite a great deal of development happening in our area new retirement communities expanding and renovating and new communities being built across our area, David explains why we are facing a looming housing shortage for those that are now, and will in the coming years, be moving into their “retirement years”. While the options in retirement communities have never been more exciting…think high-end truly resort-style living…the availability is not plentiful. Even traditional single level, low-maintenance Active Adult communities have waiting lists. So, even if you’re not considering a move today from your big, comfortable two-story home (complete with gutters that need to be cleaned regularly, shutters that need painting and a lawn that needs lots of regular attention) wintertime is a great time to think long-term, make some plans and explore the options for “down the road” and maybe…put your name on a waiting list.
