William “Bill” O’Connell celebrated his 90th birthday February 1 with residents and staff at Springmoor, where he has served on the food service staff since 1988. The very sprightly Mr. Bill moved to New York from Ireland with his family when he was six months old. He grew up going to games in Yankee Stadium to seeing some of baseball’s greats like Joe Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth. He also served three years in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was employed for many years in the grocery and bread business before moving to North Carolina and finding a new home in Raleigh and becoming a special part of the Springmoor family.
