Four statewide awards from SHIIP, the Department of Insurance’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, were presented April 18 during the North Carolina Association on Aging conference in Raleigh by SHIIP Deputy Commissioner Van Braxton.

• SHIIP County of the Year:
SHIIP’s coordinating site in Durham County, Senior PharmAssist, Inc. provided counseling to more than 1,300 clients and reached out to more than one million residents through outreach efforts.

• SHIIP Coordinator of the Year:
Carmen Long, who works with SHIIP’s coordinating site in Surry County, reached more than one million individuals and counseled more than 400 Medicare beneficiaries.

• Mickey Hanula Volunteer of the Year:
Joe Buckner, volunteer with Randolph County Senior Adults, counseled 295 beneficiaries and worked at his counseling site throughout Medicare’s Annual Election Period.

• Jim Long Outstanding SHIIP Service Award:
Ed Regan, executive director of the North Carolina Retired Governmental Employees’ Association, partnered with SHIIP to provide information to association members.
