Dr. Cheryl Greenberg, Ed.D., works as a coach, or guide, for seniors and their families as they consider and plan for changes in their personal and work lives.

Creating a Fulfilling Future

As a life coach for seniors, I frequently have conversations with folks who are thinking about retiring, moving from one home to another, and, of course, creating new roles and adventures. I have these conversations with individuals, but also in groups, when participants can share their concerns and ideas, and support each other. [...]

A Week of Joy

The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu spent a week teaching me about life. What a joy! OK, they didn’t actually come to my house, but they had a week-long conversation that was recorded in a book, The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, and as a video, Mission: Joy. The Archbishop and the Dalai Lama, in their 80s, talked about seeing life as it is, accepting the highs and the lows, being engaged with other people, and, most importantly, being empathic and supportive of others. [...]

I Love Being Grey!

I love my grey hair. I don’t worry about people saying that I look old. Instead, I enjoy the time recovered from hairdresser appointments. The world has told us that getting older is about decline, weakness, modesty, and withdrawal. Nope, getting older is whatever we want it to be, for as long as possible. I Have Choices! Today, seniors make more choices about activities and schedules. I Keep Doing! I know that continuing to be competent means that I continue to be independent, happy, and satisfied. [...]

Hot Chocolate with Tiny Marshmallows

A cup of hot chocolate with tiny marshmallows, soft music in the background, and frost on the windows. Sounds like a Hallmark winter! But we need even more for a happy and healthy winter. As the temperatures fall, it’s important to be intentional about navigating the season. The same activities that make us smile can also protect our bodies and brains. [...]

Coaching for a New Stage

A NEW STAGE OF OPPORTUNITY AND STRENGTH. Creating a fulfilling future can seem difficult. We run into obstacles. We are unsure about how to move ahead. We need guidance and support to create a "new stage of opportunity and strength" that may involve relocating, deciding to retire, finding new creative outlets, volunteering, and planning adventures. This is where a life coach for seniors comes in. [...]

The Third Act

When Jane Fonda celebrated her 60th birthday, she took stock, seeing her life in three acts. She decided that getting older was not "pathology" or a downward plunge. Getting older, she said, was "potential." Adding years brings "us into wisdom, wholeness, and authenticity." She suggests a life review for a wise Third Act. Today's mature adults want to be active and engaged, exploring and experiencing. [...]

Comfortable Conversations for Important Decisions

From time to time, we notice a loved one doing something that makes us stop and wonder. We worry about their wellbeing. We see signs that there may be problems to solve. Our parent, spouse or dear friend, for example, seems frustrated with their job, but is having trouble thinking about making a change or retiring. [...]

Is Leisure Enough?

As a life coach for seniors, I advise people to get their practical houses in order, with financial, legal, and even health checkups. However, I also advise people – strongly – to do a psychological and emotional checkup. Who will you be when you retire? What will you do when you retire? How will you keep your body and mind healthy? [...]
